How to Fit Bifold Doors

With bifold doors predicted to add between 5-10% to a property’s value, they can be an excellent addition to your home. When considering implementing bifold doors, you may want to look into how they can be fitted.

What to consider when implementing bifold doors

There are a few things you should consider before fitting bifold doors, such as:

Planning permission

While bifold doors don’t usually need planning permission, especially when they are replacing old doors, you will need to ensure that they comply with building regulations. At Framemaster, we’ll work with you to ensure we have the right information to gain planning permission for your bifold doors if required and to ensure you’re complying with the relevant regulations.

Planning permission may be required if you need to widen your existing door ways. You will also need to ensure that the opening structure is strong enough to hold the weight of your new bifold doors.

If you’re creating a completely new opening in your property, it is likely you will need planning permission. As a result, you should contact your local council to see what steps you need to take. It’s also important to note that if you’re replacing doors or creating new openings in a listed building you will need to obtain planning permission.

Check the opening of your property

Before installing your bifold doors, it’s important to ensure your opening can sufficiently take on a set of bifolding doors. Ensure the opening is level on all four surfaces and that they’re strong enough to hold the bifold doors.

Take your measurements

It’s crucial that you take exact, accurate measurements as you will need to provide them when applying for planning permission. It will also make it much easier to install your doors when you know all of the measurements are correct. You will also want to determine how many panels you would like to add to your bifold doors.

Check your lintels

This is the horizontal structural beam that spans across the opening of your door. You should check that they are in good condition and if they’re not it’s highly recommended to contact a structural engineer.

Assemble the frame

  1. Construct the outer frames by attaching the jambs and fixing the sills into two sections.
  2. Connect the sections to create the frame.
  3. Measure the frame to ensure they are the right size.

Your opening options

  1. You will need to decide on which direction you would like the doors to slide open, as this will dictate how the tracks are fitted.
  2. Secure the track into your assembled frame.

Seal the door frame

The door frame should be sealed with a weatherproof sealant to prevent water and weather damage to the doors and inside your home.

Fit the drop bolts and pivot door

  1. Fit the drop bolts to the door by installing the drop bolt keeps and aligning the drop bolts with the pivot holes.
  2. Fit the pivot door – The pivot hinges and block will need to be fixed, along with the track.
  3. Using two people, lift the door panel onto the bottom pivot.

Fit the middle doors

The middle doors will need to be attached to the frame.

Make adjustments

The doors may need to be adjusted to ensure they fit and move properly. You will need an Allen key to make these adjustments.

Fit the door lock and handles

  1. Fit the lock into the frame jamb.
